New to this and everything wine....

Just had the Joel Gott( Three Thieves) 2005 "The Show" Cabernet again.I liked it more this time around. I guess it mellowed. The bouquet was intriguing and pronounced with floral notes, nice smoke(calmer since the last time) still with bacon notes, cassis, cedar, and sage. Flavors of tabacco, oak, sweet dark berry fruit, pepper, and mixed spices. Dusty tannins here also. Again, not a typical tasting Cali. Cab. but I enjoyed it. Even though, I didn't want to put the glass down this style might not be for everyone. Note: Mostly Cabernet but small mix of other grapes as well.

"sterling vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 that was made just for this past inauguration"

Certainly not a wine that can be tracked down in a minute or so. In fact, I have been unable to find any reference to such a wine with a couple of minutes looking.

You don't especially need a picture - tell us where and how this wine shows that it was made for the inauguration . Tell us everything it says on the front label and anything inaugural related from the back label.

You're sure it's a 3L?
Yea, I did a search and could not find much about it either, and I still cant post links. My father got it through one of his wine suppliers (he owns a restaurant in D.C.) I could send you the links of the photos on photo bucket via email and if you wanted, you could place them up here. I could dictate what the bottle says but the pics are alot more useful. Ill try posting what the bottle says tonight if I can. And yes its a 3L.

I like going to a specialist bottle shop and finding the little secrets that a good wine merchant knows. They give great advice and always can recommend a wine within the budget. If I am buying wine for an occasion, I may spend up to $60, but normally between 15 to 30.

Do's and Don'ts of Wine Tastings

The best way to do wine-tasting at a dinner is to make it a dinner and not a wine tasting. Make some poor shlub write down all wines drunk (or even if he is not drunk.) Notes are catch as catch can. I have been to wine dinners where I tasted 12-15 wines, but they were dinners, not tastings.

As unfun as it may sound, a "formal" wine tasting is the best way to do a wine tasting and they certainly can be fun. One needs light to see the wine (your #2), relative quiet to discuss the wine (your #3), some time without disturbances (passing the olives or making room for the next pouree) (akin to #1) to think about the wine.

I know you don't expect to hear it from me, but a great feature at a wine tasting (or even a wine dinner) is to have the delicate amenity of a spit bucket. It is best to have several. Hey, .08 is .08. You pays your money, you can take your chances, but maybe somebody doesn't want to take chances.

It probably won't surprise you to hear that I believe a wine tasting needs a moderator - a leader. Perhaps one could think of this person as an emcee - no, for a formal wine tasting let's make that MC a Master of Ceremonies. Group activities with one goal in mind sometimes do not work best as democracies.

A little thing that is easily forgotten is to have some thing white that may be used to evaluate color. Good lighting is on thing, but if you have to examine the wine against the backgound of sea foam wall paper, an ecru table cover, or over your pinkish tapas plate or burgundy napkin, or even against a beautiful green lawn or the clear blue sky, you really won't know what color it is.

Kim, sorry the "wine tasting" really wasn't a wine tasting event but rather a "wine chugger" party.

Well I have never hosted a "real" wine tasting event myself but I agree with you on the points you made. I have always wanted to do a wine tasting at our house and in my head it resembles your idea of one.
